In the vein of Pogo’s famous quip, “We have met the enemy and he is us,” AI researchers at MIT, working with colleagues in Israel and Ukraine, recently displayed a deep fake video in which former President Nixon announces the failure of the 1969 moon landing. Worse, the prevalence and potential harm of such misapplications of AI and machine learning – especially in an election year – have failed to convince the corporate moguls at Facebook to do anything significant about the problem. Yes, they announced a new prevention policy, but it’s riddled with loopholes.  Like the empty promises of so-called “ethics boards” at AI developers, the deep fake problem is yet more proof that AI developers, whether they’re in the private sector or academia, cannot be counted on to police themselves.  #TheBook2118, #AI
