The Roman Catholic Church, IBM and Microsoft have just signed a pact – The Rome Call for Ethics – to find ways to develop “human-centred” AI.  The three admit to being “strange bedfellows,” and certainly skepticism about the venture isn’t inappropriate, given that none of the organizations is a role model of transparency.  Nevertheless, they at least deserve credit for recognizing the institutional responsibility for addressing the consequences – unintended as well as intended – of what is being created in today’s corporate, governmental and academic labs.  The coronavirus is a serious threat, but it will eventually pass; the intrusion of Ai into the workforce and workplace is a permanent condition with the potential to harm the wellbeing of millions of working men and women. #TheBookCirca2118 #AI
